The challenge

Our client, a specialist tech services company was navigating a crucial growth phase and sought to align its talent strategy more closely with broader business objectives. To do this effectively, they needed a clearer picture of how their direct competitors had scaled: how those organisations were structured at the leadership level, and how that structure supported or drove their business strategies. Understanding these dynamics would help our client benchmark their own trajectory and uncover potential opportunities for differentiation.

What we delivered

We delivered a focused, intelligence-led solution designed to inform strategic talent decisions:

We conducted deep-dive research into four direct competitors, examining organisational structures, leadership composition, and strategic direction. This analysis included executive roles, reporting lines, and the presence (or absence) of specific capabilities at the senior level.

To complement our desk research, we engaged in targeted intelligence-gathering conversations. These provided unique qualitative insights into how competitor firms were operating, growing, and adapting, insights often unavailable through public data alone.

Our analysis looked beyond the org charts to draw connections between leadership composition and business strategy, exploring how talent decisions were enabling or limiting each company’s ability to innovate, expand, or pivot.

Outcomes

The insights we delivered equipped our client’s leadership team with a strategic lens on talent planning:

We presented a robust SWOT comparison between our client and its competitors, highlighting relative strengths, potential gaps, and areas of opportunity across leadership and strategic focus.

Our report identified key individuals within competitor organisations whose roles and influence had driven measurable business impact. This helped our client understand not just what roles were essential but who was making a difference, and why.

By uncovering patterns in how competitors were aligning leadership to business strategy, we were able to suggest practical, evidence-backed ways our client could evolve differently and more effectively.
